AirBnB Tribute to a Great Man – John Fawcett

There is a great new Airbnb in Roleystone – a 3×2 two storey cedar and iron house on a half-acre of land with fantastic Canning Valley views, a big, open living area, large kitchen, good sized bedrooms and a light and bright feel throughout, make this an ideal place for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the City.

Most who book this popular accommodation, located at 532 Brookton Hwy, Roleystone, are from overseas, however, there is a growing number of locals who just want a couple of nights away from the suburban routine. Although the property is only 40 mins away from the CBD, the large block sizes of Roleystone and the wonderful rolling hills and birdsong give visitors a feeling they have escaped to the countryside.

There’s a story of a gentleman behind the name of this property.  The name “Chalet John Fawcett” was chosen by the owner, Patrick Weir, in acknowledgment of a remarkable former Roleystone resident and his former teacher, John Fawcett.

After a near-death experience on an operating table left John with medical problems, possible brain damage and years of recuperation, he returned to his favourite place in the whole world, Bali.

As the Balinese nursed John back to health, he became very fond of them and decided to stay on in Bali and repay them for their generosity and kindness.

Moved by the poverty and lack of medical expertise on the island, John set about raising money to buy the medicines and treatment needed to improve their health. He wished to address two major health issues that could be overcome and set up the Cleft Lip and Palate Program in 1989 and the Mobile Eye Clinic for Cataract Surgery, two years later.

Widely known as “Doctor John”, his assistance to those in less fortunate circumstances has earned him the love and respect of the Balinese population and also those in government circles.

John Fawcett died at the age of 85 in September 2017, leaving an extraordinary legacy.

Patrick believed John should be honoured in the area he once lived and his past home, Roleystone, and decided to dedicate his name, John Fawcett, to a new venture he had underway – an AirB&B chalet in Roleystone.
